In 1997, downtown Montreal witnessed the concept of a new type of retailing. After a remarkable success in the primary location, Eric Toledano saw bigger and decided to open U&I on Saint-Laurent where both men and women of discerning taste could discover the works of local as well as international designers. An integral part of U&I’s philosophy is to showcase local Montreal talent, as well as represent unfamiliar designers from abroad. Among the featured local designers are Yso and Denis Gagnon. Yso’s collections are at once dramatic and delicate, making him the perfect representative of U&I’s philosophy. Denis Gagnon adds a touch of edge with his raw cut leather pieces, while maintaining a fit that embraces the body. Levis Red, the Scandinavian division of Levis, also sells at U&I. One line of shoes carried at the boutique is Cydwoq; which are handcrafted shoes for both men and women. U&I applies the adage “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”, by maintaining an atmosphere of elegance and calm, while at once remaining practical for people everywhere and anywhere.
